The 10 Best-Tasting “Healthy” Halloween Candies, Posted by a Nutritionist
In recent years, the confectionery world has seen a huge shift towards “better for you” sweets, reflecting growing consumer demand for healthier alternatives. Supermarkets are now filled with healthy candies, including low-sugar candies, candies without artificial colors, natural candies, high-fiber candies, and more. This approach suggests that satisfying your sweet tooth doesn’t have to come at the expense of your health – at least, that’s the promise. And during Halloween, the lure of healthy candy is very strong. But the big question remains, can these healthy options provide the happiness and satisfaction we seek by indulging in our favorite sweets? Because if Halloween candy doesn’t taste good what’s the point of eating it – right?
As a nutritionist, I have always maintained that taste should not be compromised just for health claims. If candy doesn’t bring happiness, no amount of added fiber or reduced sugar will. Driven by this belief, I began a selfless mission: taste-testing popular “healthy candies” on the market to help you manage your Halloween diet. Having a discerning palate and openness to new tastes, I threw myself into this fun task of finding out which choices stand out, offer great flavors and accept good sacrifices. Take me as your friendly guide to the world of health conscious candy!
What Are “Better-For-You” or Health Candy?
“Good for you” is a term with no legal definition, but in general, it means that food has been changed from its traditional flavors to support our health in one way or another. So, good-for-you candy often refers to candy that is designed to be “healthier” than traditional candy. These products aim to satisfy the craving for something sweet while providing nutritional benefits or negative health impacts.
Since there is no official way to find “better-for-you” sweets, I decided to make my own to start this taste test proposal. I used the following criteria to determine whether a candy could be considered “better-for-you”.
Better-for-you candy deals
I decided that the healthiest candy I would taste would have to include at least the following benefits. I did not find many instructions – I do not include a certain amount of sugar or fiber when serving “good for you candy” must have, for example. Instead, I took note of the most common concerns health-conscious people have about traditional candy, and looked for improved options in those sore spots. Here’s what I was looking for:
- Less sugar. Reduced sugar or no added sugar are both eligible. But I skipped sweets that replaced sugar with aspartame. Artificial fragrances aren’t necessarily harmful, but they have been linked to some not-so-pleasant health effects.
- Other natural resources If the candy used natural flavorings or flavors instead of artificial ones, it was worth a taste test.
- Lots of energy. Here, I was looking for: the addition of vitamins, minerals, or fiber to enhance nutritional value.
- No artificial additives, including artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
- Allergen Free Options: Halloween is difficult for children (and adults!) with dietary restrictions, such as those allergic to peanuts, gluten, or dairy. So allergen-free candy has found a place on my list.
The Best Healthy Candy For Halloween
Also, what good is low-sugar, high-fiber, natural, allergen-free candy if it doesn’t taste good? Since many healthy sweets cost more than traditional sweets, the last thing you want to do is spend money on something you end up not wanting to eat. So, I both checked the nutrition facts and ingredients to find candies that are actually better for you and not just using the health halo, and I tasted them to make sure they didn’t let you down you are pulling hard. Now, I’ve ranked them based on ingredients, nutrition, and most importantly, taste and consistency. No healthy candy on this list, folks! (I’ve given extra points to candy with Halloween packaging because I’m a sucker for fun holiday packaging.)
