I’m a doctor – here are five things I will never eat

A doctor has revealed five foods he would never eat – and many of them could put your health at serious risk.

The information was shared in a new TikTok video written by Dr. Jessica Kiss lives in California and practices family medicine.

Dr. Kiss, who goes by the username @askdrmom on social media, often takes the stage to share medical guidance and wisdom, and this time was no different.

‘Here are the five things I will not eat as a doctor,’ Dr. Kiss said at the beginning of the video.

Starting with number one, the medical expert said that he would never eat burnt fried rice again, calling it a ‘one-time eating situation.’

‘B. cereus, a type of bacteria, comes out when cooked rice is left at room temperature for a while and it regenerates especially if you reheat it in the microwave not enough,’ he explained.

Bacillus cereus can cause food poisoning, according to the Cleveland Clinic, and even serious complications that can lead to death.

‘That’s because it makes spores, so it’s not just easy to kill the bacteria, you have to kill the spores, and they’re useless,’ the doctor continued.

However, Dr. Kiss pointed out that it would be best to eat it in a “warm” rice cooker, but avoid eating it at room temperature.

Next on his list was any food that was left out during the picnic.

‘I’d rather go hungry than eat food that’s sitting out, because your risk of foodborne illness is much higher,’ he explained.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, you never want your picnic food to be in the so-called ‘danger zone’ – between 40°F and 140°F for two hours.

And, if the temperature outside is above 90°F, you’ll want to shorten it by one hour.

Bacteria can multiply ‘rapidly’ at this temperature, according to the FDA, which can cause food poisoning.

‘I’ve seen it happen many times, after a holiday weekend like this, the ERs are full of people sick with food allergies… eat right away or eat later,’ Dr. Kiss added.

As a third rule, Dr. Kiss said she would avoid eating things that ‘match the color of her hair,’ which is dyed pink and purple.

‘Sometimes, I will, maybe this is not the perfect thing for me, but I would say 99% of the time I will not eat things covered in food dye,’ he shared.

‘It’s just not good for your system, I don’t want to be pooping neon for the next week again, so yeah, I avoid that like the plague.’

A fourth way to avoid food was to eat anything from a can that had teeth removed, for fear of botulism.

Botulism is a rare but potentially life-threatening illness caused by botulinum toxin, which can occur in foods that have been “improperly canned” or fermented, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“If the can has teeth and I’m not the one who got me to put it away right away, I’m going to worry about botulism,” Dr. Kiss acknowledged the video.

‘Botulism isn’t a good thing, so I wouldn’t eat it, it’s not worth fifty dollars if I had a way to get a can with no teeth,’ he said.

Finally, the last thing he admitted he could not eat is the ‘surprising fact’, and it is grapefruit.

‘The reason is that many medicines interact with grapefruit,’ Dr. Kiss revealed.

For example, grapefruit can interact with medications and anti-anxiety drugs to prevent high blood pressure, among many other things, according to The FDA.

The way grapefruit is processed in your body, it interacts with a ton, I mean a ton, of medications, so if you are taking medications for any reason you should always check to make sure there are no interactions. grapefruit changes the way the drug affects your body,’ he concluded.
